Shawnee on Delaware, PA - With a newly improved and spacious layout for 2014, the Pocono Chicken Wing-Off, an important annual fundraiser for Monroe County Meals on Wheels, will return to Shawnee Mountain Ski Area on Sunday August 10.
Scheduled noon to 4pm and held rain or shine, the festive event promises a variety of tasty, hot, and unique wings prepared by approximately 10 of the Pocono region’s most popular restaurants. Festival attendees pay as they go for wings, beverages, and other food. Proceeds from all wings sold go to benefit Monroe County Meals on Wheels. Over 62,000 wings were served at last year’s event generating over $14,000 for the non-profit. Also new for 2014, a $100 donation to Meals on Wheels will grant access for 2 people to a V.I.P. sampling tent with seating and no lines and also includes 25 complimentary wing tickets.
Wings are judged in four categories: Chef’s Choice, Most Original, and the grand prizes, People’s Choice for Hottest Wing and People’s Choice for Best Tasting Wing. Each category winner receives an award certificate, $250 prize check, and bragging rights for the winning entry.
The event schedule includes outdoor DJ music, food vendors, face painting and a children’s magic show. Mimi Mikels, executive director of Meals on Wheels, comments “Meals on Wheels volunteers deliver nutritious meals to approximately 150 homebound people a day who are unable to provide for themselves. The Chicken Wing-Off is an 18-year Pocono Mountain tradition and one of the most popular events of the summer. We attribute its success to the area restaurants and wing chefs that participate, our sponsors, and our host sites, including our current host, Shawnee Mountain. This event is a reflection of how the Pocono community and area non-profits can join forces to make a difference and is our single largest fundraiser for the year.” Mikels continues, “This event would not be possible if not for the local restaurants and businesses that volunteer their time and donate their staff and wings to Meals on Wheels. They spend hours dishing out thousands of wings making it possible to provide food for the homebound.”
Tamy Galfo, the Wing Off coordinator for Shawnee Mountain, said, “There is still time for Pocono restaurants and chefs to register. The earlier you submit your entry, the more print and airtime we will be able to provide to help promote your business.” Contact Tamy for details and registration forms by calling 570-421-7231 x 245.
